Demystifying Chiropractic

There are a lot of controversies and misinformation circulating about chiropractic treatment, and many of them don’t even have any solid evidence to back themselves up. Some friends at work once told me that chiropractic treatment is a kind of yoga that you can do yourself. I mean, most people don’t even know that this alone is a treatment method backed up by science! So I decided to begin from the very basics here, and tell you about what chiropractic treatment from a chiropractor in Mesa, AZ really means, and debunk the myths that are surrounding it.

I won’t deny the fact that there are a lot of chiropractors out there that claim that their method of therapy has the cure for every disease, and present the whole thing rather dramatically, than rationally. This makes the whole concept of chiropractic treatment appear rather shady, mystical, and miraculous. But I am a man of science, and I do not believe in anything that is disapproved by it. So when I first came to know about chiropractic treatment, being skeptical and all, my first reaction was to find out the science behind it, if there is any.

To my surprise I found out, chiropractic treatment has been used for over centuries in ancient Greek civilization, and it is one of the oldest methods of therapeutic treatment that survived the test of time and is practiced still today.

So, what is it about chiropractic that makes it so effective?

For a start, chiropractic treatment is not some magical hocus-pocus that you do and you’re healed overnight. It’s a methodical approach to treating you physiological problems by aligning your spine and torso with the rest of your body. This takes time and active participation from both the patient and the therapist.

When you first enter your chiropractor’s office, they will follow some steps to start treating you. Usually, they are:

  • History and Symptoms: They will first ask you about your history, how you might have gotten such an injury or condition, and what other methods of treatment you have previously tried. This makes it easier for them to understand your condition. And as they will e starting your treatment by treating your symptoms first, they would also ask you what symptoms you have and for how long or how often you have them. The clearly you provide them with these information, the easier and more effective your treatment will become.
  • The Chiropractic Exam: Next, they will run some general tests that are run before any therapy like blood pressure, pulse, reflexes, and respiration. After that, they will  examine your affected area and check its range of motion, the muscle tone, the strength of the area’s muscle, and the neurological of the affected area. Finally, might have you move the affected area in a specific manner analyze its posture, and apply some primary chiropractic manipulation to the area that is neurologically associated with the area that is affected.
  • Diagnosis And Treatment: Now, they will come to a diagnosis and begin your treatment according to that. This treatment mostly involves adjustments to your spine and lower back. Follow ups may include changes in sleeping positions and some exercises.
